MALCOLM SIMMONS 1946-2014
POOLE PIRATES speedway legend Malcolm Simmons has sadly passed away on Sunday after losing his battle against emphysemia.
Known affectionately as “Super Simmo” the classy blond track star was hero worshipped at Poole between 1975 and 1980 where he scored 2,148 points in a stunning scoring spree at the Dorset club.
Club owner Matt Ford expressed his sadness at hearing the news of Simmo's passing: "In my eyes Malcolm was the ultimate speedway rider.
“I grew up watching the sport and he was my hero. It’s a very sad day for everyone. My sympathies and condolences go out to his family.”
Simmons, 68, had recently been admitted to a Kent hospice for his final few weeks.
His speedway career began back in 1963 and he last rode for Arena-Essex in 1989.
He was British Champion in 1976 the same year that he and Peter Collins MBE won the World Pairs championship and he finished runners-up to Collins in the world championship.
